The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood (ARCL), formerly named Australian Red Cross Blood Service (RCBS), is a branch of the Australian Red Cross. It is the body primarily responsible for blood donation and related services in Australia. ACEMS works with RCBS in an on-going partnership to address long ranging methodological challenges around donor centre efficiencies, planning stocking and delivery of blood and blood products, ensuring product safety, planning future demand and other problems relevant to their core business
ACEMS Associate Investigators Mark Fackrell and Joyce Zhang have and continue to supervise student research relevant to the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, including current PhD student Achini Erandi who has been looking reducing donor waiting times and thereby improving the donor experience and positively impacting donor return rate. Achini has led the development of a simulation model to capture the uncertainty in the donation process, and then developed a method for determining optimal staff schedule and resource allocation based on the predicted demand.
They also joined the SanguinStats network, a group of international researchers from The Netherlands, South Africa, and Australia who are interested in blood service work.
This provides a good foundation, including relevant new research knowledge to share, for exploring new research engagement and collaboration opportunities again with the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood in 2021.
